Acupuncture & cupping basics
Who can have acupuncture or cupping treatment?
Anyone can benefit from acupuncture and cupping therapy — adults and kids alike, with very limited contraindications. Both modalities work by regulating chi flow along meridian pathways to restore the body's energy equilibrium.
What kinds of conditions can be treated?
We treat mental-emotional issues (anxiety, depression, stress, insomnia, ADHD), upper respiratory and gastro-intestinal conditions, and neurological and musculoskeletal disorders, among others. NIH studies have shown acupuncture to be effective alone or in combination with conventional therapies for numerous conditions.
What happens on my first visit?
Initial visits generally last 60 to 120 minutes, depending on complexity. Your practitioner will take a full history, perform a physical exam, and use diagnostic tools specific to traditional Chinese medicine, such as tongue and pulse diagnosis.
Does it hurt?
The needles used are about the width of a human hair. Most people don't feel any pain, though experience varies based on individual pain tolerance and sensitivity.
Is it safe?
According to the World Health Organization, acupuncture treatment is safe when performed by a licensed and well-trained practitioner — which every acupuncturist on our team is.
What if I'm afraid of needles?
No problem — acupuncturists have many other modalities to treat an array of issues, including cupping, Gua Sha, Tui Na, acupressure points, e-stim and moxa.
How many treatments do I need, and how often?
It's common to receive 8–12 treatments to see improvement, though some people see results sooner. A typical plan for a single complaint involves one or two treatments a week.
Do I need a doctor's referral to get acupuncture?
No referral is required. Virginia law asks that you either have a recent medical exam or sign a brief acknowledgment form at your first visit.
BodyRight body contouring
What is BodyRight?
BodyRight is a treatment series that transforms the body layer by layer, combining two world-class body treatments — PHYSIQ and Virtue DeepRF — that address tissue, muscle and skin laxity together.
What areas can be treated?
Key treatment areas include the abdomen, arms, inner and outer thighs, back of the legs, and buttocks.
How many sessions are needed?
A full BodyRight series consists of 5 PHYSIQ treatments plus 3 Virtue DeepRF treatments.
Is there any downtime?
There's no downtime with PHYSIQ treatments. With Virtue DeepRF, expect micro scabs to persist for about 2 weeks.
How often are treatments performed, and when will I see results?
The full BodyRight series takes about 12 weeks, with Virtue DeepRF performed every 4 weeks. Optimal results appear 3 to 6 weeks after completing the series.

How much does treatment cost?
Your first session includes a full 90-minute visit. Call or book online and our front desk will walk you through current package pricing — we also offer flexible 0% interest payment plans.
Do you accept Medicare or Medicaid?
Medicare and Medicaid do not cover acupuncture at our clinic. Dr. Alkimawi does accept Medicare for gastroenterology visits.
